Training your pet to use a ramp or steps is very easy and will probably be the easiest training you will ever do. Many pets will take to using a ramp or steps with very little encouragement. Others are hesitant and will require some help in becoming comfortable using them.
Reward and praise are the underlying principles for training any pet, especially dogs. Dogs live to please their owners. By showering your dog with praise and rewarding them for correct behavior you are creating a habit that will last a lifetime. A lifetime that is enriched not only for your pet but you as well. You will be happier with a pet that responds to what you have trained them to be right. Your pet will be happier because they sense the pleasure you feel when with them. Remember, reward and praise. Praise and reward.
To begin, let your pet familiarize themselves with the ramp or steps. Since this is something new to their environment let them become comfortable before you start training. You can do this by sitting next to the ramp or step and encouraging your pet to smell or touch them. You do not want your pet to be afraid of or mistrust the ramp or step before you begin teaching them.
You can begin with a folding or telescoping ramp by laying it flat on the ground or floor and leading your pet across. Remember to have your pets favorite treats available to coax them if required and praise them every step forward. Patience is the key, so do not be alarmed if this takes several tries before you feel your pet is confident walking across. Raise one end of the ramp onto the couch, bed, vehicle, etc. and ensure it is secure, or place a permanently sloped ramp or steps in the location it will be used. Use treats to entice your pet to step onto the ramp/steps. If your pet eagerly begins up, heap praise on them and continue offering treats as they climb toward the top. Remember reward and praise, praise and reward. If your pet seems tentative or reluctant, be patient. You may have to hold their collar and guide them up the ramp as they climb to achieve their rewards. Some pets may be more agreeable to coming down the ramp or steps before attempting to go up. Once again use treats to lead them down while at the same time remember to praise them. Always use encouragement and praise while teaching your pet. If you are training a pet to get in and out of a vehicle reward them with a ride if they enjoy taking trips.
This should only be required the first couple of times as you introduce your pet to the ramp or steps. Soon your pet will be using the ramp or steps with confidence as if it has always been a way of life for them. Before long you will have the satisfaction of helping your pet maintain a healthy and safe life while getting to those favorite high places, in and out of vehicles and pools or into and out of your boat.
